Chapter 12

Trees loomed on every side of us. High above, the sun shone brightly, but the thick leaves of the canopy cast the forest in shadow. Glitz and Slushie sat on my shoulders.

We were a long way from everyone else. I couldn’t even hear our class any more. Luckily we had Jason, who was using his compass to lead the way.

“Lava flew due east, so if we keep following this path, we should find her,” he reassured me. I really didn’t understand maps and compasses very well, but Jason is brilliant at that kind of thing so I felt a bit better.

As we marched deeper into the forest, I wondered what Lava was doing now. Was she safe in a sunny glade, exploring moss and lichen? Or was she in danger, trapped in a thorny bush or lost in a creepy cave?

Something rustled overhead.

“What was that?” hissed Jason, looking up. We followed his gaze.

A small purple shape burst from the leaves, swooped low, then soared away.

“It looked like a bird, but also . . . not like a bird,” I said.

“Like that yellow thing you saw earlier?” asked Jason.

“Something very weird is going on in this forest,” said Faiza.

With a bound, Glitz launched herself from my shoulder. For a moment I thought she was going to plummet to the floor again, but she didn’t. With one, two, three big flaps of her wings, she flew upwards. She coasted around the treetops, hooting curiously, trying to find the purple creature.

All at once there was a giant CRACK, like a tree branch breaking. My friends and I ducked, terrified something was about to fall on to our heads.

Then we heard little dragon chuckles.

“Hoo, hoo, hoo!” said Glitz, flying back down. She landed on my shoulder, spread out her wings and CLAPPED them together, right next to my ear. The sound was just like a tree branch cracking.

“Eek!” I yelled, jumping out of my skin. Glitz laughed and then Slushie joined in too.

I started to giggle. I’ve always loved little scares – like when you play boo!

Flap, snap, CRACK!

Glitz flew into the trees once again, clapping her wings and trying to make the loudest sounds she could. Slushie flew up to join her. Faiza and I whooped and clapped our hands, joining in.

We were having so much fun we nearly forgot our quest until Jason stopped suddenly in front of us.

“It’s no good, the path has turned north. That’s completely the wrong direction,” he said.

The dragons swooped down to look at Jason’s compass. We stood thinking for a moment. None of us knew what to do.

Then Slushie’s ears perked up.

“Mrrr,” she said, flying away from the path, into the undergrowth. She snaked in and out of brambles. “Mrrr, mrrr.”

“I think Slushie wants us to go that way,” I said.

“Let’s go!” said Faiza.

We turned and stomped into the wilderness.
